IS Using Clothing To Support A Cause An Effective Way Of Advertising?

It’s amazing what tactics are developed to influence the way we think. Have you noticed that clothing is now being used to influence society? Many stores are selling shirts promoting recycling, war, peace, and fighting against diseases. They are using what appeals to us (fashion) to influence the way we think. When you see a really cute shirt that says, “War is peace” would you buy it for the message it conveys or simply because it’s cute? People tend to purchase items because of how it looks and for that purpose alone.
If you saw me with a shirt that says recycle would you say cute shirt or would we engage in a conversation on whether or not people should recycle and the benefits it has on our society? Would you even stop and ponder the meaning behind what the shirt says? Highly doubted! So though fashion is used as a form of promotion, is it effective? Some may say no. It is just another form of evidence to the ignorance of society because even when something is placed clearly before us we ignore its importance or purpose.

I personally know that when i buy clothes i look for the cutest thing, not necessariyl the most important cause or the better. To be honest i might not even notice there is a cause on it if the initial design of the shirt is cute enough to divert my attention away from the words. To be honest, i dont think it is very effective, even when i read others shirts i don't pay attention to the cause. I just read it and then go about my business.

I think clothing is a supporting way of advertising bc if some people see a shirt with a cute saying they may want to buy it because of the way it looks. I know for a fact if i see a cute shirt with a saying on it i will look at what it says before i decide to buy it. I think that's how alot of businesses get some of their points across by using shirts combined with other things. Especially the politicians use the shirts to get someone running for office a possible vote from the people who decide to wear it.

I think that clothing is an effective was to promote advertisiing but I dont think that it has a strong influence on society because people will do what they want wheather fashion is promoting something for a great cause. I think that it depends on the person and their feelings about the thing that is being promoted.

I think its effective to some extent. If you look at this year there have been so many clothing and bags with peace signs on them, but yet people are still fighting. When diddy did the vote or die campaign and had the t-shirts it was pretty effective, so in someways it is effective and someways it's not effective.

I have noticed that fashion has been used to address the worldly issues that we face however I don’t believe that is effective. The most common issues addressed are recycling, war and peace. Though I have seen many of my peers wearing cute shirts that promote recycling however I still know very few people that actually do so. Our school doesn’t even recycle! They just have recycling bins they empty into trash cans. Craziness. Another common issue is war and peace. Well considering the series of crimes that are arising in Rochester fashion has failed in its attempt to promote peace. As for the war aspect many people believe we shouldn’t be at war but no one does anything about it. Yes they may wear a shirt now and then but that’s about it. As for me I see the shirts in stores all the time and actually recall complimenting a shirt that said “Peace not War” but never even thinking about what it was saying. Perhaps “hey those match my blue straight legs” but nothing more. So in a sense I do fit into the category of the ignorant society who ignores all the issues despite the continuous attempts to address them even in the form of fashion which we all love. And even now after it has been brought to people’s attention if they saw a person with a shirt or bag promoting a major issue they wouldn’t address it themselves. So I believe it is not effective. Another thing I would like to point out is that I saw more Micheal Jackson shirts after his death than I saw Obama shirts after his election as president. I believe that says something about the mindset of our society.

I have to disagree with you Kadija, i don't think the "Vote or Die" t-shirt was effective if anything i think the uprise is voting was because of the controversial candidates. Obama brought many voters out that on other occasions wouldn't have voted. I just don't see clothing as an effective advertising space.

I think clothing is effective in advertising. When i see someones shirt and its talking about peace or love or recycling i actually think about it and whether i do that. I think it really does work and think it should be used alittle more.

I know when I'm shopping I look for the cutest, cheapest, most durable thing I can find. (Thus i go home empty handed many times). However, I do look at the message. I think that the message sometimes is part of what makes it cute. If a shirt is promoting something like beer, no matter how cute the font is I'm still scrunching up my nose at the thing! When I see someone with a cute shirt, yes I say how cute it looks but then I engage in a informal discussion about it (too formal like in the post tends to scare people). So advertisment through shirts is effective, but it all depends on who the message is reaching out to. If the message is too broad people don't tend to listen. But if it can grasp a certain group out of a crowd of many, then the message maybe heard. So it maybe effective but other advertisments like television commercials (which use methods of repetition) are more effective in promoting a message.

Honestly if a shirt had lyrics to a song on it ppl would buy it. Even if they didnt like that song, but because its wat everyone is wearing. If a company was trying to advertise somethin a great way is to put it on shirts because ppl are more willing to but it especially if its a cute shirt

i would say theres no absolute answer for this topic...it all depends on the persons personality or attitude. If you was to compare a plain tshirt to a design tshirt thats quoted "Peace" or something its the peoples way they are that say oh i wanna get this because it say that,it cute (or i want one because thats ma favorite watever) or or it could be the ones who say i dont wanna spend my money on no junk like that(or be the ones who would look at it and continue along with there business like they didnt see anything)...but if its something thats simple, easy to understand, and eye catching..of course it will cause an effective way of advertising something to a society..it'll just take a lot of thought before printed on clothing.

I like what Antwan said, most shirts that advertise "peace" or something to the effect of that is usually eye-catching. But the fact that it catches the consumer eye only brings the consumer to buy it not necessarily help out the cause. Basically the advertisement on clothing may brings awareness to the cause but it doesn't bring people to help the cause.

When I go shopping I like to look for really cute clothes but also clothes that support something that I stand for. I mean I wouldn't buy a shirt that said: KILL CHILDREN just because it's cute. I pay attention to the clothes that I buy and the messages that they send. This tactic is partially effective because on the other hand, when you're going crazy shopping you just throw the cutest thing you see that's in your size in the cart. I can openly admit to the fact that sometimes I would get home and not even notice certain things on my t-shirts and jeans.

I believe alot of people do buy items like that simply because it's "cute" or the recycle sign has their favorite color on it. Then again some people buy it from a store that happens to have a Cause on it or some people buy promotion shirts from the actual company where the money goes to the cause so I guess what i'm saying is I have mixed feelings about it.

I do not believe clothing has a negative or positive effect on people lives. I myself am not effected by it. If im going to continue recycling,i will, but a shirt is not the reason.A shirt also can't influence me to do something i dont agree with. When i buy clothes i look for something cute and stylish but if it has reading i have to read it to make sure im not promoting something negative.

Yes because these days every one looks at what every one else is wearing weather they like them or not. Its actually the best way to get a point across and the best way to advertise. Holla Back.

but it doesnt necessarily mean that every one will follow what is printed on a shirt. thats just bull.
