Do Violent Video Games Cause Violence?

Many ‘M’ rated video games are very controversial. Games like Grand Theft Auto have been sparking debates on how they have negative influences on our youth. A few years ago two teenage boys went on a sniping spree which wounded one and killed another. The boys also told authorities that they were mimicking the game by trying to hit the sides of passing vehicles. Also, many children spend an excess amount of time on video games. Many children also claim that their favorite video games are violent ones, this can, and has been proven to result in aggressive behavior. It has also been proven that these violent games have tended to make children less caring and likely to help out their peers. So what do you think? Do these types of video games have a bad influence on our youth?

i don't think violent games influence children and if they do in some cases its simply the parents fault. i say this because on these so called violent games it says rated m for mature which is a certain age and up so children shouldn't be experiencing these games at all. but i don't think the game causing violence i think, its all in the mind of the beholder were the violence comes from.

Video games are made to see the excitement in ones eyes once they have a new game. I think it makes everyone happy. To shoot people in violent games is like letting your anger out. Violence gets influenced by other people who decides to make that wrong choice. When someone gets a violent game the first thing that pops in there head is not lets do it in real life but i can't wait to beat this game. Am i right?

I think violent video games DO have some type of influence. Some people get to much into the game and start thinking that they're that character or might get ideas from games. I don't think these violent games are going anywhere BUT its the parents responsibility to make sure that they're children don't get these games not the company...they just want the money. An example of violent game influence is the situation with the two boys from the Columbine High School Massacre where people believed the violent video games they played triggered them.

Yes these types of video games can make younger children think that it’s alright to go out and do stuff like that. But the maturity comes in at the parents’ part because they know that it is a violent game not recommended for young kids and that you have to teach them right from wrong otherwise everyone will think that’s how our environment works. With games like Grand Theft Auto and what those teenage boys did it’s just an example how our youth get bad influences based off those things. According to some psychologists such as Douglas Gentile and Craig Anderson both PhD’s say that these types of games may also be increasing children’s aggression for the reasons of: 1) the games are highly engaging and interacting, 2) they reward violent behavior, and 3) because the children repeat these actions a numerous amount of times while playing….so I think that they do cause an affect on our youth’s minds.

I believe that currently majority of the aspects of the media places a negative influence on our youth. From videos and cartoons on to games.however simultaneously people know better something may not have such an effect on your life unless u allow it to do so. i mean seriously have you ever heard the phrase don't try this at home.i don't play video games but i think all video games brain wash people not to mention they are very addicting.however children do learn from their surroundings so watching or playing violent video games can influence they way you behave and act therefore the rating "M" for mature.however maturity is just a judgementt of character not neccessarily an age.Alec i agree that it may allow you to let out your anger however there are alternatives that are more postive. video games are not a positive way to let out your frustrations. However i agree with your last statement. but once you beat the game does it not compel u to seek a greater challenge which may be testing them in real life?

Many people appear to be blaming parents for the things that infuence their children. Do you not believe that they may find access elsewhere? i mean i am sure many parents don't allow their child to smoke or drink but the fact of the matter is that the age people begin these habits are younger and younger. so are the parents to blame or is our society?

I agree with Jeri .i do think that violent video games have some influence. I have played games like grand theft auto, and while im playing them i do tend to be in a more aggressive state. It is also the parents job for being responsible to talk to their children and tell them that it might not be a good idea to use these games. But even if the parents do this, kids can still sneak and acquire the game and get really into it and try to imitate, which is not good.

I would have to say that playing "M" (rated Mature) video games as a child dosen't influence the way they are. The child would have to be violent before hand to be an influenced in a negative way. Just because someone plays a violent video game does not mean they will become violent.
For Example Say a child was such an angel..they never did anything bad in their life but happens to be into violent, or/and harsh detruction game such as GTA(Grand Theft Auto) shouldn't change the way they act..more likely they will remain the angel they were from the start.

I think videogames influence the mind of the gamer, but i think it depends on how old the person is. A eight year old (just a senario) should not be playing a game that is rated "M", so if thats the case thats what they're use to and when they get older they will be adapted to that state of mind.
Which goes back to the parents. If they are letting their child play these games and then wondering why all of a sudden they are so violent, that might be the case, not saying thats all senarios, but that typically is an option to think about.
But there are cases in which Nautica stated where those videogames are not in the house, but the child has access to them elsewhere and in that case you just have to hope that the child uses the right judgment and morals that there parents have taught them and think to themselves, "would my parents allow me to play this?"

i don't believe video games cause violence except for those w/ impressionable minds. Most children under maybe 13 shouldn't be allowed to play violent videos games. Sure the games may have negative influences theres no doubt about that. But at the same time, where are parents when their young children are playing these violent destructive video games. When i was younger my mother never let me play or watch anything rated higher than pg. Because she was being a parent, where are the childrens parents at?

I think video games are not a bad influence because i have been playin violent video games sence i was a little boy and now i am i nice person, so to me it does not really matter wht you are playing it all depends on what some people tell them during the games action, but at the same time i do not let my little bother play games like Grand Theft Auto because some people think diffenertly from others.

This topic has been in debate for many years and the only game that ever seems to come up is GTA. It seems to me that the problem is more with GTa than video games in general.

With that being said, I myself have researched this issue for quite some time and have come to the conclusion that video games have no effects on the behavior of children. In fact, various shoiws have done topics on this. One is from latest season of Penn and Teller's bullshit on showtime. Look it up when you have the chance.

I am in total agreement with Taneesha (and props on finding sources to back up your argument). Exposure to violent games has been shown to increase aggressive behavior or at the very least glorify the behavior.

First and foremost, constant exposure to violent games can desensitize a child to graphic images and violence seen in the games. It creates a connection that these violent acts is an everyday occurrence. This is made worse by the age children are being exposed to these violent acts. Younger children are just developing their moral compass. If they are shown images and videos of violent acts at this critical age of development, they have no previous knowledge to compare against and are thus more likely to engage in these acts.

Secondly, games like Grand Theft Auto glorifies violents acts. Players get money for killing hookers and robbing banks. Call of Duty awards points and unlocks achievements for getting 20 headshots (approximation). This instills in children a satisfaction in these acts. It has been shown that positive reinforcement is the best way to develop behavior; and creating connections between the gratification parts of your brain and killing is never a good thing.

While I agree that not ALL children will go out into the world and attempt to kill hookers to get money, it gives them the idea that this is okay. And while we can ask game companies to stop making these type of games, the fact remains that these are marketed towards older demographics (as evident with the M rating). The fault, though not solely, lies with parents who buy games for children without looking at the rating system; with parents who let their child sit in front of the console instead of talking to them or engaging them in morally building behavior.

As a random point of trivia, I am a heavy old-fashioned pen and paper gamer. For those that don't know what this means, I play Dungeons and Dragons. The version involving taking notes and character immersion (not online). Back in the late 70's and early 80's, in the heyday of these sort of games, concerned parents made a big hullabaloo about certain 'monsters' that players often fought against. Mainly that they were called devils and demons. They connected the game with Satanism and the occult and successfully had these 'monsters' removed from the game (they and their angel counterparts were renamed). Where are those parents now?

Video games can damage the way some children see reality. My argument is more for the sake of young children than for adults.

Nooooo!!! its just a video game. A really fun video game that we play for entertainment. In grand theft auto we get points for hitting people. But u don't see people hitting people purposely in real life.
